The Federal Government has reiterated its determination to overhaul the power sector with a view to boost industrialisation in the country.
Vice-President Namadi Sambo gave the assurance Wednesday to the Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), Dr Kandeh Yumkella, who paid him a courtesy visit at the State House, Abuja.
Sambo said the Federal Government’s transformation agenda was geared towards addressing power-related issues, especially in the use of a holistic approach. “Part of the strategies being employed was the use of Public Private Partnership (PPP) avenue to develop small and medium hydro-power projects.”
The Vice-President, “stated that studies have been completed for 10 hydro-power plants and 17 more are undergoing such studies and that transaction advisers are being appointed. He said Nigeria has over 200 existing dams and that the combination of water, power and irrigation will lead to boost in both small and big business.”
Sambo further stated that the wind-to-power pilot scheme was currently ongoing in Katsina State for 10 megawatts, stressing that government was trying other alternatives sources of energy, including waste-to-power to ensure a revolution in the power sector.
Other areas discussed were transportation sector where Sambo noted that government is currently diversifying in the railway sector by rehabilitating over 4,000 kilometres of railroads, the dredging of the River Nigeria, the East-West road, and the possibility of dredging River Benue.
On his part, Yunkella, who was accompanied by the Minister of Power, Prof. Barth Nnaji, said the UN was ready to explore the power potentials in the ECOWAS sub-region with particular emphasis on Nigeria.
The UNIDO Director-General stated further that the energy revolution was the planting of seeds for others to continue from, which was what was obtainable all over the world.
