Toys: Buying Tips

Want to shop for toys for your kids? Factors to consider include age of the child, gender, personality, interests, skills, special challenges or physical limitations.

Toys for infants
Even though toys are really assets that children value, they may become bored with a new set of toys, if it is not compatible with their age, gender, interest and physical limitations.

Toys help children develop learning and cognitive skills. It is recommended that you focus on toys that will enhance these skills while making your choice. Toys are grouped by age.
  • Toy for infants: choose toys that will expose your baby to sound, shape, texture and taste. Brightly coloured, soft and lightweight toys which will encourage grasping, holding and exploring are strongly recommended. It is advised that you do not buy toys with sharp edges or cords that can wrap around the neck for infants.

  • Toys for toddlers
Toy for toddlers: choose toys that encourage physical play such as bicycles, balls, chunky blocks, large-piece puzzles. These will allow a child to use excess energy and develop emerging muscle control. It is advised that you do not buy toys with sharp edges or cords that can wrap around the neck for infants.
  • Toy for pre-school kids: are usually fascinated with how things work and why they work the way they do. Choose toys that will encourage the practice of real life skills such as toy telephones, construction sets, modeling clay, and simple board games for them to encourage creativity.
  • Toy for school age children
Toy for school age children: choose toys that teach counting, matching and problem solving skills. Such toys will enable your child develop self esteem. Sports toys, computer software, and problem-solving math toys fall into this category.  It is advised that you do not buy toys with sharp edges or cords that can wrap around the neck for infants.
  •
  • Toy for preteen children: this age group is often less interested in toys. Choose toys that will sharpen your child’s social and intellectual skills, since pre-teens are more concerned about acceptance from their peers. Consider board games such as snake & ladder, monopoly or scrabble games which are group sports.
  • Toy for children with special needs: you need not get special toys for your challenged child. It is not necessary. All toys encourage the development of physical, cognitive, social, and emotional skills
