For this reason, tourists, both local and international tourists frequent the various exotic beaches that dot the metropolis’ coastline for the guaranteed rejuvenating experience derivable from the calming waves of the Ocean. Beyond the legendary therapeutic effects of the Ocean waves, many more visit the myriad beaches for other reasons such as horse rides, solitary walks and for tanning their skin. It is easy to give in to the temptation to spend your trip relaxing on the Ocean front. Here are some of our top places to park your beach towel.

Eko Tourist Beach
Eko Tourist Beach Resort, Lagos
Situated off a lonely stretch of road, Eko Tourist Beach Resort is about an hour’s drive away from the Lagos metropolis. This discreet hideout is ideal for visitors who wish to get away from it all. No hustle, no bustle, it is so tranquil at the resort making it hard to believe that this calm haven is just 50 kilometres from bubbly Ikeja municipal, in the heart of Lagos State.

Covering over 20 acres of land, the ultra modern Eko Tourist Beach Resort is dotted with Coconut trees, and has more than one kilometre of sparkling Atlantic seashore. The resort features exquisitely furnished semi-detached chalets and a huge conference lobby, while the general ambience is a favourable to communing with nature. Part of facilities at the resort is a cozy restaurant which serves Nigerian, Continental and Asian cuisine.

Though a Lagos State Government initiative, the privately managed Eko Tourist Beach Resort offer guests the privacy they need, while a paved pathway leads out directly onto the beach area where stooping Coconut trees provide a pleasant shade from the scorching heat. It is a popular retreat/get-away venue for leading corporate organisations in the country.

Eko Tourist Beach
Accessible via the Lekki-Epe Expressway, the Resort is popular among fun seekers and picnickers, as an alternative to the hustle and bustle of conventional beaches such as Bar Beach, Kuramo Beach, Oniru Private Beach and the Suntan Beach in Badagry. Also referred to as Akodo Beach by the local inhabitants, the Eko Tourist Beach Resort was initiated by the Lagos State Government to open up the tourism corridor and facilitate private sector participation in tourism development.

It is clean, secure and offers serene swimming beach experience that most visiting tourists wish for.  Powered by generators to maintain uninterrupted power supply, the Eko Tourist beach resort has an amusement park, children swimming pool, a clinic and parking space that can accommodate more than 800 cars. There are also security personnel on ground to maintain law and order within the beach vicinity.

Tarkwa Bay Island
Tarkwa Bay, the crescent-shaped beach along the Lagos harbour remains immensely popular across tourist segments from those who crave solitude to the cavorting bohemian. A total package, this Island often described as the playground of the rich, has more than 6 kilometres of Lagoon water between it and the nearest access point from any part of the restive Lagos metropolis. Tourists have to brave the break-neck speed of a speed boat, or a poorer weather beaten speed canoe to gain access.

Characterised by picturesque scenery and refreshingly cool breeze, Tarkwa Bay is a sheltered beach within the Lagos harbour breakwater. It can be accessed by boat from Bonny Camp, Tarzan Jetty at Maroko (N1000 per person) or under Falomo bridge on Victoria Island. Apart from its zero entrance fees, unlike other public and private beaches in Lagos, the other positive aspect of this beach is its safe bathing even for children.

Tarkwa Bay
Tarkwa is a man made bay and beach created during the formation of the Lagos harbour. The beach was shaped by the moles used to form the inlet to the harbour and covered with sand dredged from the bottom of the channel. As a result the water is a lot calmer than the exposed Atlantic coastline elsewhere around Lagos. The fine sand is also much more comfortable to walk and lie on than the sharp sand of the other beaches. With its own resident community, most of whom make their living from the tourists who visit the beach; this is the only “maintained” beach in Lagos with the beach hands cleaning up the garbage every weekend before the influx of tourists.

Also given the fact that it is cut off from the main habitations of Lagos by water and is therefore only accessible by boat, this makes it a beach for real beach bums and sun worshipers, in contrast to the other “bums and worshipers” that flock to the Bar Beach. It is also possible to surf in a corner of Tarkwa Bay and other water sports such as Jet Skiing and Water Skiing are fairly common, although don’t expect to find equipment there to rent! You will have to make friends with the local nautical elites so you can use their water sports equipment.
