  Tips for buying kitchen knives

  • Buy steel: a good kitchen knife should be made of steel. If not, you will use it only for a few years. Mind you, if you kitchen knife is steel, it cannot be sharpened.

  • Buy steel: consider buying knives with full tangs or bolsters, which provides a barrier between your fingers and the knife edge.

  • Think maintenance: find out how your knife should be sharpened and cleaned. The handle of some knives rot if soaked in water.

  • Buy right: you need to know the type of knife to buy. Is it a chef’s knife or a paring knife? Different knives serve different purposes. If your budget is tight, settle for the utility knife, it is for all sorts of cutting jobs.

  • Warranty: if you are the buying the very expensive knife design, check out the manufacturer’s warranty.
